Everybody knows that college finals stress abounds at this time of year. The best ways to deal with stress according to various studies?
- Exercise/Go for a walk/Get outside – Exercise and going for a run helps too. Especially since it’s usually followed by a hot shower. But just getting out for a walk improves memory and reduces stress – a win/win. You don’t have to set a new PR to get benefits. Even walking to the library helps.According to a Stanford University study a person’s creative output increases by an average of 60 percent when walking.
- Music – An Arizona State University (ASU) study showed that people who listened to classical music had a shorter stress response than other groups. The jury is still out on other types of music. But those noise cancelling headphones can also cut down on distractions that can cause stress.
- Talking to mom – Yep. We saved the best for last. A study by a University of Wisconsin-Madison researcher showed that talking to family immediately lowered the stress hormone cortisol. Not just some feel good stuff, actual physical proof of lowered stress just by talking to mom on the phone.
What better way to get them to call home than a finals care package they have to walk to pick up? (Sorry, we couldn’t resist)
